Introducing Frank Ocean: Nostalgia, Ultra

By Steven Hyden March 15, 2011
Much like the ’80s BMW on the cover of his debut album, Nostalgia, Ultra, gifted singer-songwriter Frank Ocean apparently is out of touch with the times. That doesn’t jibe with his résumé, a seemingly impeccable combination of mainstream R&B credentials (he’s co-written songs for John Legend and Justin Bieber) and underground cool (he’s associated with outlaw hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All). But after going nowhere as a solo artist signed to Island Def Jam, Ocean decided to post Nostalgia, Ultra as a free download last month. Hearing the record, it’s no shock that Ocean’s label didn’t know what to do with him. Nostalgia is a moody, frequently downbeat character study, a sort of musical version of the Reagan-era confessional Less Than Zero.

Ocean presents himself as a troubled guy in his early 20s who does cocaine for breakfast (as he sings over an aestheticized shuffle supplied by superstar producer Tricky Stewart on “Novacane”) and can’t decide whether to rue or revel in his conflicted feelings about women (the hit-single-in-waiting “Songs For Women”). Sampling world-class sulkers like Coldplay and Radiohead, as well as Stanley Kubrick’s queasy dissection of marriage, Eyes Wide Shut, Ocean saves his boldest move for the 7-minute epic “American Wedding,” fantasizing about his nuptials as the ultimate hymn of coke-addled self-absorption, The Eagles’ “Hotel California,” plays out in its entirety. Like the rest of Nostalgia, it’s dark, playful, a little tasteless, and absolutely riveting.

Justin Bieber: There Is No Cure for 'Bieber Fever'
![]() |
| Justin Bieber arrives to throngs of screaming fans at the premiere of his film "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never". (Bauer Griffin) |
The "Runaway Love" singer gets mobbed by screaming teenage girls wherever he goes -- a reaction dubbed "Bieber Fever" -- and he claims there is no way his fans can stop themselves.
Justin told BANG Showbiz: “They may be crazy but they’re the ones that help me to be here and who put me where I am in the first place. I never worry about getting more fans as it spreads.
“And, by the way, there is no cure for ‘Bieber Fever!’”
The 16-year-old singer also revealed his admirers have gone to extreme lengths in order to meet him, and last year a mother got a tattoo of a radio DJ just so her daughter could meet him.
He added: “I’ve done things like signed a cereal box before. But the weirdest thing that’s been done to meet me? Well some girls have got tattoos of my name done. One mom has a tattoo of a radio DJ on her back, which she had done in order to meet me.
“The radio station had a contest and if anyone got the guy from the radio station’s face tattooed on their back, they could meet me, and that was the contest, and she did it. It was pretty weird!”

Justin Bieber's Parisian Promotions
Making his rounds as he usually does, Justin Bieber was spotted visiting NRJ Radio in Paris, France on Thursday (February 17).
The “One Time” hunk looked cute as he jumped out of his chauffeured vehicle and posed for several pictures before heading inside for his on-air interview.
He told press, “In the film, you get to see just me in my regular life and I take you back to my hometown. You get to meet my grandparents so it’s really cool.”

Justin Bieber: BRIT Awards Fan Favorite

Sending the crowd into a fan frenzy, Justin Bieber was spotted arriving at the annual BRIT Awards at the O2 Arena in London, England earlier today (February 15).
Dressed in a slick black and white ensemble, the “Never Say Never” stud meandered down the red carpet and kept a rather straight face while his picture was being snapped up.
According to MTV, the studio is reportedly waiting for delivery of the re-cut film before deciding if it will be released in theaters late in February or as part of a special DVD.

Justin Bieber Goes Bald For Jimmy Kimmel (Video)
I’m sure more than a few tween hearts came to a complete stand still when they saw a BALD Justin Bieber on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ last night- LOL.
Justin without his trademark hair? Can NOT imagine it!
Luckily it’s just a bald cap. Otherwise, I think Jimmy Kimmel would have to go into hiding this morning, given how, um, aggressive Justin’s fans can be ;) .

Usher Talks Grammy Night with Justin Bieber
The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards are this Sunday (February 13) and Usher and Justin Bieber are pumped for the night’s festivities.
The “OMG” singer and the “Baby” pop sensation will perform together along with Jaden Smith, and it’s gonna be hot.
"And also to be there to perform, to kind of tell the story of how we came together. This music business has definitely been good to both of us, and this year we have a lot to be happy for."
He continued, "The performance will be fun. We want to get up there and just do what we do. Be comfortable, and have a great time. ... This is kind of a crossover for Justin. Having performed on so many different stages, this is the way that I wanted him to be seen and an opportunity to show the industry — a lot of the industry, that didn't believe [in him] — some of his other talents. He's going to play acoustically, and also, we'll get down a bit."

Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" LA Premiere
Spending another night on the purple carpet, Justin Bieber was looking dapper at the Los Angeles premiere of "Never Say Never" on Tuesday night (February 8).
The 16-year-old phenom has busily been making his way around North America ahead of his 3D film's scheduled February 11th release, with today's stop seeing him decked out in a purple suit at the Nokia Theater L.A. Live venue.
With the tickets priced at $30 per person, buyers will also be doted with a few movie-related gifts including Bieber's famous purple shades.
Talking to THR, Paramount vice chair Rob Moore said, "As we were putting together the release plan for this movie, we were very respectful of the relationship Justin has developed with his fans. We wanted to stay to true to that relationship, and give them a special and specific way to be the first ones to see the movie."

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Hold Hands, Go Public
Granted, these two were snapped getting awfully cozy on a yacht last month. But those were candid pictures.
And, yes, we watched videotaped evidence of the duo on a movie date a couple weeks ago. But friends of the opposite sex have been known to attend films together without any romantic entanglements involved.
This finally ends all discussion that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are merely pals, though. The singers, well aware of the cameras around them, held hands as they strolled along Santa Monica pier yesterday. There was some serious eye-gazing going on, as well...

Justin Bieber Premieres "Never Say Never" in NYC
Closing out another night on the red carpet, Justin Bieber was the center of attention at the New York City premiere of "Never Say Never" on Wednesday night (February 2).
Held at Regal E-Walk 13, the 16-year-old phenom was decked out in an all-black ensemble with a purple bowtie and matching shades as he greeted fellow attendees including Russell 'Russy' Simmons, Daniel 'Diggy' Simmons, Lynsey Mickolas, L.A. Reid and director Jon M. Chu.
With the film set to hit theaters on February 11th, Mr Chu was recently asked by MTV News if he received any ribbing from his friends when he signed on to spearhead Bieber's movie project.
To this, the "Step Up 3D" director replied, "There's always people [giving me flak], whether it's the 'Step Up' movies, dance movies or the Justin Bieber movie. People will make fun of you, but now they truly have the fever, for sure. Since [I signed on], he's won four American Music Awards, including Artist of the Year, he's nominated for two Grammys he's on the cover of Vanity Fair, and I think they've fallen for him as well."
Describing the picture as inspirational, Chu said, "Especially for this generation of kids, [it's important to show] that they could make it on their own without a big corporation. I thought it was an exciting way to tell it: through his music."

New Justin Bieber Movie Trailer: The Rags to Riches Story...
Just stay focused, everyone. And you'll accomplish anything.
So states Justin Bieber at the outset of the following new trailer for "Never Say Never," the wildly-anticipated biopic about the teen icon set to his theaters next month. Yes, next month!
"I knew he could play the drums; I never knew he could sing," a friend says in the clip, while another adds: "He never had any lessons or anything."
And yet this shaggy-haired sensation has sold out Madison Square Garden, a feat that few singers on the planet can accomplish. He just believed, readers. You can, too...

Ashton Kutcher Admits Justin Bieber Taking Over Punk’d Is A Possibility

Ashton Kutcher shared that there’s a real possibility of Justin Bieber signing on to revive “Punk’d”!
He shared (in a round about way):
“I really can’t talk about it because everything’s sort of in process. It’s a possibility that it could be happening. I will not be hosting the show in the future. People were afraid I was going to punk them wherever I went and I’m starting to get invited to stuff again and it’s actually a good thing. I’ll be involved in some capacity if we do it and there could be a new host but I can’t say a whole lot.Can you imagine the ratings on that show? Talk about ratings gold! But I wonder how much Justin could really pull off – with his crazy popularity, I’d think it’d be hard to be too sneaky? I can’t believe the show has been off the air since 2007 – where does the time go??
“He’s a nice kid and he’s a funny kid – and people don’t know he’s a funny kid yet… and he’s sneaky. And I like sneaky people.”

Ashton Kutcher Dishes On Twitter, Love, And Justin Bieber

With his new film “No Strings Attached” opening this week, Ashton Kutcher sat down with Redbook to chat about relationships, his love of Tweeting, and his admiration of Justin Bieber.
On whether or not guys have an easier time NOT letting feelings get in the way of a “friends with benefits” relationship:
“I think guys wind up after a while not wanting another guy sleeping with the girl they’re with. But eventually everyone wants something more. We all have that desire for something special, something committed. We all want to be The One.”Were he and Demi friends first?
“No my relationship was a relationship first. Well, there wasn’t anything physical happening for a while, but from the get-go it was more than friendship. It was a deeper connection than that.”On why he Tweets messages to Demi Moore when they are in the same room:
“For the same reason we send you roses at the office: because sometimes being publicly adored is nice. It feels good. So that’s why I might be standing right next to her and tweet, ‘My wife looks so amazing tonight.’”On why he’s a huge Justin Bieber fan:
“That kid’s built an empire.”Are you planning to check out the movie this weekend?

Justin Bieber and Angelina Jolie: Say Cheeeese!
But don't put Angelina Jolie in that group. The actress posed alongside Justin on the red carpet of Sunday's Golden Globes, much to her chagrin, apparently.
A friend of Justin's named "jonmchu" posted the following TwitPic yesterday, claiming it was snapped when Bieber met Jolie on the red carpet. But we question its legitimacy. After all, how can any female stand next to this 16-year old and maintain her composure in such a manner?!?

Might Justin Bieber Go Insane?
At the age of 17, she became the youngest singer to write, produce and release a number-one hit on the Billboard 100. So at least this 40-year old is speaking from experience when she says of Justin Bieber's fame:
"It's too much too soon. People have to remember, even though a kid can be wise beyond their years professionally and can handle showbiz, emotionally you're not developed."
